All about our company

We founded www.fatfairyworks.com out of a genuine and pure passion for helping people be at ease with themselves, and an increasing urge to help reduce waste. Our goals, ambitions and inspirations have come together to form a truly amazing and quite diverse company that all of us are proud to be a part of. Our founding (Boss) Fairy was apprentice trained and a very experienced engineer and with the team can repair just about anything. Also having spent many years in the UK's NHS service as a clinical engineering specialist working with complex conditions, our Boss Fairy genuinely understands why some people can struggle with image.

Since formally opening in 2020, we have grown in our success. We have developed our web sites not just to sell products and services, but to inform, support, empower and to go above and beyond to ensure our customers are satisfied and will come back to us again and again.

All about the Fat Fairy Works and
what the images’s actually mean

From humble beginnings the The Fat Fairy Works group is now growing and is actively diversifying into new and exciting areas.  Although maybe similar in name, in reality our businesses are connected by a genuine passion to help people. This story explains all.

2015 - The Fat Fairy Café

IMG_2142.JPG

First to arrive in 2015 was the original Fat Fairy Café, Sheffield, England, opened as a get-away sanctuary to help customers take time out to relax and re-energise. It was named after a small fairy statuette that just seemed to appear from nowhere as the café was being built. She just arrived and settled in quickly and quietly on to a small unobtrusive shelf.

In reality, the charming Fat Fairy didn’t do anything other than sit quietly on her shelf, though everyone who has been fortunate to gaze upon her enigmatic beauty may have said that they inexplicably found that special moment of warming and inner peace. It was often said that a unique air of calmness and serenity often filled the café as she quietly watched over her visitors. Some believe she was listening to all their hopes and inspirations and could help them overcome all obstacles if they believed hard enough; some said she wasn't. Everyone is different.

Unfortunately the café had to close in early 2020 with the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic but our beautiful Fat Fairy still watches over the café in the hope that someday it may reopen.

2020 - The Fat Fairy Resto-Curio Emporarium

Although a difficult time to open a new business, as the café closed a new enterprise started on the same site and took the name “Fat Fairy Resto-Curio Emporarium”. Set up originally to repair vintage and interesting curiosity’s, local interest grew and it soon developed into a small local business. As it’s reputation for a personal service spread it wasn’t long before the business was registered as a going concern and started to spread its expertise to more general repairs. A small on-line shop was set up for special vintage items and curio's, and this soon expanded to a dedicated antiques unit nearby.

As work slowly increased for the resto-curio shop, it wasn’t long before the emotional effect of seeing someone react to the return of a precious memory seeded new ideas. Perhaps this was the influence of the Fat Fairy again? Who knows? Tears of joy, genuine smiles of happiness, and a knowing that a customer, a real person, was helped to move on with their life just felt good. The Fat Fairy Works Resto-Curio Emporarium had now discovered its true calling.

As the business developed, its own ethical and waste management issues were examined. After studying the services and resources available it was decided that the resto-curio works was not going to attempt up-cycling as it was felt that this is primarily for making old and broken objects into things that no-one really needs. Instead of throwing an old item away the repair service decided to make something broken functional again: this is to save waste and the need to buy new.

2022 - The New Fat Fairy logo

Fat Fairy 2022.png

The original Fat Fairy logo developed for the café in 2015 was felt a little too risqué for general use so in early 2022 she had a make-over to give a bit more subtlety but still retain all her feminine allure and curves; she is a fairy after all. It was decided to incorporate the new style Fat Fairy into a new fresh design which encompassed the services offered with personal and ethical messages. She also has five sisters who have each re-invented their style and outlook for the new Fat Fairy Works world.

This Fat Fairy Logo is the main image used by all the Fat Fairy Works services and products. She is joined by the 'Crossed Wand' and 'Winged Hammer' images to represent other aspects of the Fat Fairy Works world.

2022 - The Crossed Wand logo

Crossed wand 2022.png

The Crossed WandThe Crossed Wand logo is made up of an image of a vintage engineer's screwdriver resting over a fairy’s magic wand.

The wand is to represent that magical and warm feeling when lost loving emotions are rekindled and remembered, the excitement of a new start or the anticipation of moving out into the world.

The screwdriver represents the repairing of a physical item that holds a precious memory, or the mental rebuilding of confidence and new self assurance.

The special combination of the wand and screwdriver shows how, with a bit of care, anything can be made better and put right and when worn on its own, or as an addition image to the main design, the Crossed Wand logo is a unique and understated design to show you care.

2022 - The Winged Hammer logo

Winged Hammer 2022 copy.png

On its own the hammer would represent destruction; destruction of clothing which is worn out or no longer fashionable, and the destruction of broken items which are discarded and replaced.

The magical fairy wings attached to the hammer now change its character and represent longevity of our every day items, such as clothing designed to last longer, or the active salvage and repair old and worn goods.

The combination of the wings and hammer can also symbolise the journey back to a better time or place, or alternatively a new start.

2022 - The New Fat Fairy Works Clothing Emporium

People always feel better when something positive and new come into their lives; sometimes it is something unexpected and exciting, or perhaps just the acceptance that it doesn't matter what everyone else thinks. No matter what the way, it is that multitude of happy individual feelings the Fat Fairy Works Clothing Emporium tries hard to emulate and promote with its brand of fun, stylish, individual and quality clothing and accessories.

Owning a Fat Fairy Works product not only feels oh so good on your body, but also it may help inspire a more confident, motivated and adventurous person. The Fat Fairy knows everyone is an individual, and from compact to cuddly (or any shape and size in between), right from the start the product range was always going to be non-judgmental. The adage “for everyone and for every body” was deliberately chosen to promote this.

By wearing the “Fat Fairy”, you are saying "I'm happy to be me, I'm happy in my own skin, be like me and you can be happy too!". You are now joining the every-growing population of individuals who are just happy to be themselves and want to show the world that they don't need to be told what to wear, what to look like or what to do.

The Fat Fairy Works work hard on sourcing quality clothing that will last longer in wear and washing, and therefore less items should be needed over time. More clothing made from recycled materials are being introduced and although not fully there yet, more are on the way. Read more at our sustainability statement here.
